This Animal Crossing player saved their New Year’s celebration from a tarantula attack

That was a close one As we spend yet another holiday in quarantine, especially one that usually means celebrating with a big group of people like New Year’s Eve, video games are a good solution for helping things feel a bit more normal. THQ acquires 38 Studios’ Kingdoms of Amalur IP

Ellen Rose is likely ecstatic THQ Nordic has announced, today, that it acquired the IP rights to 38 Studios’Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. While not specifying which assets came along with it, this could mean the game will now receive a remaster in the future. Since I knowsome super fansof the game do exist, it could also mean an eventual sequel way down the line should a remaster sell well. For the time being, though, we just have the news and not much else....

THQ sues Jakks Pacific over WWE contract

Things just got real (again) between THQ and Jakks Pacific. The publisher ofRed Faction: GuerrillaandLegends of Wrestlemaniarecently sued the toymaker over a decision to extend their joint deal with the WWE for an additional five years. Apparently, Jakks Pacific inked the binding contract with the WWE without THQ’s permission. That’s a no-no, we believe. THQ’s argument is that Jakks shouldn’t have the ability to make a decision for both parties. THQ also doesn’t like a term in the new contract that keeps the publisher from publishing a WWE game a year after the contract is toast....

To new beginnings in old games

A small problem I have always had a bit of trouble playing older games. This might not come as a surprise to some discerning Destructoid readers, who have, in the past, derided me for the recency bias seemingly on display in a handful ofmy ranked lists. It’s true — I do tend to play more new releases than older ones, and I tend to enjoy them more, as well. Call it an occupational hazard (it’s easier to write about new games when you’re playing them on release), chalk it up to my age (I am, as you might imagine, younger than many readers), but the fact stands: I prefer more modern titles....

Try, try again: This Dark Souls II trailer is accurate

Aching Bones I’m so happy we’re gettingDark Souls II. I say that knowing full well that pain and suffering await, as evidenced by this new Tokyo Game Show trailer. Much of the promotional footage so far has focused on the new lighting system in that underground area with armored foes, so it’s nice to get a glimpse of other areas. The wayDark Souls‘ level design was weaved together was one of my favorite aspects, and I’m hopeful we’ll see a similar amount of verticality represented in the sequel’s environments....

Tweet suggests January release for Darkest Dungeon on Switch

‘Hopefully… mid-Jan’ For all of you masochists willing to once again traverse the sadisticDarkest Dungeon, only this time in Switch form, recent news suggests you might not have too much longer to wait. Replying to a fan on their official Twitter, developers Red Hook Studios, have opined that the strategic adventure title could be coming to the Nintendo console “mid-Jan”. The game would lend itself well to the hybrid format and would be equally as playable, and as frustrating (“Missed” my ass), on either screen afforded by the Switch....

Whatcha been playing this (birthday) week, Destructoid?

The art of partying Happy weekend, friends, and welcome to this birthday edition of Whatcha Been Playing? Whose birthday, you ask? Why it’smy birthday! That’s right, today sees The Industry’s Chris Moyse slide one more bead over on the abacus of life. Frankly, I don’t know how I got this far — a life packed to capacity with long walks, bad houses, far too many tablets, and even more donuts. But I’m still here, because, no matter how bad things might have gotten from time to time, there is always much to do, much to achieve, much to enjoy, and many fine people still to meet....
