Contra enters the real world on its 30th anniversary

Contra(orProbotector, depending on what part of the world you hail from) was one of the Nintendo Entertainment System’s most iconic games, one that strongly resonates with people who grew up with it even today. The series just celebrated its 30th anniversary, as the arcade version began appearing in arcades in late February, 1987. The home version was one of very few early NES games to offer simultaneous two-player mode, which is likely the biggest contributing factor to the regard old folks like myself have for the title....

Cute Bubble Bobble precursor Chack’n Pop hits the Arcade Archives

Say, you look mighty familiar… Nope, you’re not seeing things. These familiar little characters, whom you no doubt recognize from the 1986 hitBubble Bobble, first made their gaming debut two years earlier. They were the enemy characters in Taito’s formative platformerChack’n Pop, which is, incidentally, this week’s entry to Hamster’s Arcade Archives range. Released in arcades in 1984, before finding its way to a host of preliminary console platforms,Chack’n Popis a painfully cute cartoon adventure starring a globular character with comically extendable legs....

Diamond in the ruff: MGSV: Phantom Pain in English

TGS footage Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain‘s E3 showingstirred a deep lovefrom within my belly. More games like this, I thought, stuffed with a wealth of deep and idiosyncratic mechanics. Trying to communicate the concept of Wii U, and what can really be done with the tech, is not an easy task. As with Wii Sports and the original Wii before it, Nintendo is hoping to demonstrate the potential of the gamepad/tablet hybrid with a minigame collection calledNintendoLand. One thing that I think is most excited about the Wii U is asymmetric multiplayer: giving one person more information, and more tools than the others....

EverQuest II Extended offers free-to-play servers

In the face ofWorld of Warcraft, I sometimes forget aboutEverQuest. My experience with the title is limited to watching a dude in my college dormitory who played obsessively shortly after the first release of the game. Now, more than a decade, the series still has the staying power to keep players in Norrath, apparently. Still, it has to be tough for them to compete. In an effort to expand the audience, Sony has announcedEverQuest II Extended, adding a free-to-play subscription model to entice players....
