November: The Month of Ron Perlman

For years and years, there’s been criticism leveled atCall of Dutyfor just doing the same thing over and over again. It’s a fair criticism,Black Ops IIIdidn’t feel all too different toBlack Ops IIto me, but there’s always been one bit of the series that had a pretty decent level of creativity: the Zombie mode.

It’s been set in World War II, on the moon, it’s featured horror film legends, it’s done all sorts of neat stuff. The Zombies mode works as a nice change of pace from the SoldierTangoFoxtrotMilitaryonslaught that is every other mode in the series.

With the trailer for theBlack Ops IIIZombies mode,Shadows of Evil,we’re treated some campy 1940s noir goodness. There’s a murderous star, a detective who could be mistaken for a Chuckle Brother, a stage performer with a moustache that puts the detective to shame, and a bare-knuckle bruiser. They’re surrounded by the pouring rain, neon signs, and wailing trumpets as they do battle with the undead. It’s camp and I kind of love it.

It seems Activision is still willing to pour a small country’s worth of money into the games and their voice cast, despite the series’ popularity waning in recent years. Jeff Goldblum, Heather Graham, Neal McDonough, and Ron Perlman are all lending their voices to the mode, which can’t be cheap.

Good luck if you wanted to see what the gameplay is like though, as there isn’t any in the trailer. You’ll just have to wait forBlack Ops IIIto be released November 6.
