“Clint who?” you might ask? Well, thisClint! He scored all of Aronofsky’s movies fromPitoBlack Swanand yes, that includes the overusedRequiem for a Dreammelody that was found in practically every trailer with dramatic slow-motion action scenes — untilInception‘s BRRRRM stole the crown for most overused film music cliché.

In an interview with The Quietus, Clint Mansell casually mentions that he is working on scoringMass Effect 3. To Mansell, scoring a game is more like being a DJ who combines elements organically than it is with movies:

“You’ve got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent. You’ve got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts. You can bring the pain when required.”

It’s often said that film music is at its best when it’s experienced, just enough out of reach to not be explicitly aware of it being there. Other thanRequiem for a Dream‘s famous theme, this has always been the case in Aronofsky films, so we should be in for a very atmospheric treat. Having said that, I’m sure we all want an epic orgy of recognizableMass Effectthemes in the ending cutscenes forMass Effect 3.

While the full interview doesn’t say anything else about the game, it’s worth a read if you have a passing interest in the movies he scored or music in general.
