To put it bluntly,Battlefield 4was broken when it came out. Everyone’s accepted that fact, including EA itself. EA CEO Andrew Wilson recently chimed in to candidly say thatBattlefield 4‘s shortcomings had to do with its scope, and that the entire situation was unacceptable.

In an interview withEurogamer, Wilson stated “Think about whatBattlefield 4was — 64 player multiplayer, giant maps, 1080p, Levolution that was changing the gameplay design in an emergent way. There is a chance there are things you are going to miss through the development cycle. And you end up in a situation we had withBattlefield 4.”

Although he blames the game’s ambition for its failures, Wilson isn’t shirking responsibility. “For me, the situation we had was unacceptable. For the team it was unacceptable,” he said. Wilson added “We have worked tirelessly since then to verify the gameplay experience got to where it absolutely should have been at launch and we’re focused on that and we continue to deliver value to that player base.”

As unfortunate as theBattlefield 4situation was, EA’s treating it like a learning experience. He claims that moving forward, the company’s going to try to have the final version of games done earlier, allowing developers more time to rest. Further, Wilson said “We’vechanged development processes, we’ve changed development timelines and we’ve changed testing processes and beta processes, all with a view to not have the issues again.”
