Wait, what?

I have watched the trailer forEcho of the Wildstwice now, and I still do not really know what to make of it. Developer Anthony Case describes it as a “puzzly narrativy adventure,” which I can sort of see. The main character wakes up in a forest and must survive, using tools and other items to manage hunger, thirst, and the like. Presumably to protect from ultraviolet rays, there is a dainty sun hat, and he eventually puts a shirt on.

But then there are other things going on in the trailer that just make me go “hmm.” The pixel art is augmented by more modern lighting and particle effects, which fuel nightmare-inducing glowing face orifices. Then there’s a scene where the protagonist is transported to a dingy living room, away from the dangers of the wilderness. Something fishy is going on here, and I may just be intrigued enough to attempt to find out what.
