Also, the best character in the sub-series is back again

Damn it. I seem to be interested in spite of myself. This new story trailer forLightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIIIis just arcane enough to trick me into it. I’m not sure if I would have understood a bit more of what I just saw if I didn’t abandonFinal Fantasy XIII-2, marked improvement that it was, about 40 hours in, but this series seems to have gone completely off the rails. Lightning is now Charon and in dialogue with God.

At the same time, that isn’t necessarily the worst thing. I mean, Hope is still there. Ugh, why is Hope still there. Still, this seems nicely divorced from the convoluted fal’Cie/l’Cie mess that wasFinal Fantasy XIII, and the daft time traveling ofFinal Fantasy XIII-2. It’s no less grandiose, mind, but all this clear cut talk of God is rather interesting, but perhaps I’m lettingFinal Fantasy X‘s interesting examination of dogma cloud my judgement and give me false hope. Ugh, Hope.

Maybe I’m setting myself up for disappointment, but I guess I’m not as weaned off theFinal Fantasyname as I thought I was. I have to be connected as I wait impatiently for aFinal Fantasy XIIHD remake. Plus, they’ve gone and again brought Fang back, one of two good characters from the first game (the other is Sazh). Hopefully she gets more screen time, though this seems to be a largely Lightning-based affair.

If nothing else, at least Lightning’snew outfitisreallycool. Definitely some of the better character design in theXIIIsub series. Then again, will you wear it when you could bedressed like Cloud Strife?
