Game Developer Magazine’s survey shows

Though we often discuss the insensitivities that females face in the game industry (see above image), a recent survey conducted by Game Developer Magazine presents a more internal conflict: on average, male game developers earn 25% more than females.

Difference in wages can depend on experience, education, and many other factors, but some are quick to point to discrimination. It’s certainly a factor and one we know all too well in this industry, but let’s also remember thata 2012 surveyfound that women make 19.1% less than men, across all professions. A 6% drop from the average isn’t anything to sneeze at, however, as asking for a 5% wage increase is a bold move in this economy. With this in mind, let’s look at some of the more interesting results from Game Developer’s survey.

Patrick Miller, who helped conduct the survey, hadsome more to add at Gamasutra: “Across all disciplines, the men we surveyed are more likely to have more experience. 623 male devs have over six years of industry experience, 426 devs have 3-6 years, and 284 have less than three years.”

Let’s at least agree it’s a complicated issue.
