Slowly but surely

I won’t claim to know what the future holds for virtual reality as a whole, but the cost of entry is becoming less of an obstacle, companies like Oculus, Valve, and Sony are still pushing forward, and every day more people are finding out just how transformative this tech can be in the right hands.

What I can say is this: 2017 gave us some of the best VR games to date.

Personally speaking, this year brought one of the most awe-inspiring gaming experiences of my adult life. I’ll readily admit thatResident Evil 7left room for improvement and refinement in a future installment, but even with its flaws, the game was revelatory in VR. During those first few weeks after launch, it almost ruined traditional video games for me; they just didn’t feel the same any more.

Every now and then, VR gives me that same hopeful outlook. The tech isn’t as affordable, streamlined, or intuitive to set up as it needs to be for more mainstream audiences, but I have to believe that’ll all fall into place with time. Until then, these are the nominees for Destructoid’s Best VR Game of 2017:
