Sony UK’s managing director Ray Maguire hascalled out rival consoles, arguing that while the PlayStation 3 is still full of potential, other machines are already hitting their spiral period.

The comment came from thesame discussionwhich saw Maguire justifyHome‘s delay, where he also suggested that a lengthy development process leads to the creation of the most powerful gaming platform in history. Maguire is not a man who minces his words when talking about the glory of PlayStation.

“Yes, we might take a bit longer sometimes to bring a product to market, but when we do, we bring you the most powerful gaming platform ever to hit – and it will be something that will around for a very long time,” waxed the Sony spokesman. “It’s nowhere near even halfway through its lifecycle, and I could argue that some other competing formats are on their way down right now.”

Sony has argued for a long time that the PS3 will outlast both rival consoles, but I think the platform holder rails to realize that such a boast is not exactly a good thing. If the PS3 is still Sony’s principal platform when a new Wii SKU and a next-generation Xbox hit, it shall be the Black Box o’ Blu-ray which is looking obsolete and past its prime.

Congratulations to Sony for digging its heels in and sitting in the trench for a long fight. However, moving slowly in an industry that passes you by at light speed is not always the wisest of decisions.
