Handed modder a phone to talk with rep

AGrand Theft Auto Vmodder claimed on reddit that Take-Two sent private detectives to his house in an apparent attempt to intimidate him into ceasing all development on his mods.

In August, the creators of the modFiveM– an alternate version ofGTA Onlinethat ran separately from Rockstar’s servers –were bannedfrom Rockstar Social Club and couldn’t play the game any more. The banning was due to the mod containing “code designed to facilitate piracy” according to Rockstar.

It’s worth pointing outGTA Onlinehas microtransactions, which may have been the motivating factor behind shutting down the mod which still required players to have a paid-for copy of the game.

Fast-forward to now, mod creator Ntuathy hasreleased a statement on redditclaiming Take-Two recently did some pretty scary stuff when trying to getFiveMshut down:

A battle scene in Battlefield 6 Open Beta

So I just got a pair of PIs at my door claiming to be sent by Take Two, handing me a phone with a person somewhere in the UK or US or whatever to ‘discuss how to cease my activities with regard toGrand Theft Auto‘, that ‘they know what happened before with Activision and want to not get the lawyers involved at this time’, however they ‘have tested their legal standing already and are quite certain of their point’ and ‘aren’t willing to accept any solution other than ceasing my activities’. Oh, they also ‘couldn’t disclose any conversations they’re having with other modification developers’, didn’t want to talk about general modification policy as ‘it was just about my case’ and admitted they ‘looked through my source code’.

So, assuming this is true, Take-Two sent people not related to the company to do something that a legal cease-and-desist document should’ve been adequate for. They also used a communication method the modder previously had no access too and would be unable to follow up on or keep as evidence should the need arise. That’s really, really scary andincrediblyshady.

Now of course, this is currently a completely unverified claim as Take-Two hasn’t released a statement about the alleged incident just yet. We’ve contacted them for a statement and will update should we get one.
