Following the news thatDestiny 2developer Bungie hadeliminated 220 staff and over 100 more are being absorbed by Sony, players have been looking for another game to play.Warframeplayers have seen something similar happen with other MMOs, and the community is welcomingDestiny 2‘s with open arms.
TheDestiny 2community was shaken by news of these layoffs because the game’s latest expansion,The Final Shape, and its follow-upEpisode Echoescontentare widely considered to be the best for story and gameplay the title has had in years. I don’t believe there’s a mass exodus of players leavingDestiny 2just yet, but many are certainly moving away from the game because they don’t know how else to show their disappointment over the layoffs.
Players on theWarframesubreddithave been making it clear that they’re happy and waiting to welcome any and allDestiny 2players who are looking for a new community to join and MMO to play. WhileWarframeis a great MMO that doesn’t require you to spend a single penny to enjoy it, it’s nothing likeDestiny 2. User Kashm1r_Sp1r1t put it pretty well. “I hope they likeWarframe. But please temper their expectations. It’s a VERY different game.”
I really got intoWarframewith the release ofThe Duviri Paradox. While the game is pretty approachable, players must work through 11 years of story before they can tackle the latest content, like the upcomingWarframe: 1999.
WhereDestiny 2requires you to just grind until you get the items you want or need to progress,Warframehas its community. The player base is incredibly positive, and pretty much every request in the marketplace for resources to help you build a specific item is met with more resources that you need from random players you’ve never interacted with.
When I’ve spoken to players in my own journey, it’s become apparent that there’s also not just one endgame toWarframe, but several. Some players chase Fashionframes and grind for cosmetics to make the most beautiful Warframes possible, while others grind forPrime Warframes, weapons, or simply to help others through difficult missions.Destiny 2definitely has an endpoint after you’ve played through all its content, but in the best way possible,Warframejust never seems to end.
Warframeis a fantastic alternative toDestiny 2, but I don’t believe leavingDestiny 2is the right response to Bungie’s layoffs.Warframehas thrived because developer Digital Extremes listens to feedback from its players and releases content when it’s ready. If Bungie can do that, there’s a chance everyone leavingDestiny 2now could return to a better game one day.
