I’m already dreading That Scene

I wasn’t planning to watchPokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolutionthis year (or any year, for that matter!), but now that the movie is coming to Netflix on August 11, 2025, I’ll struggle to say no.

If you sawPokémon: The First Moviein the late-’90s, you know what’s up.Evolutionmight have a radically different style – so much so that it’s freaky to look at Ash and co. – but it’s still a remake.

“When researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, they unleash a creation that goes against the very laws of nature: Mewtwo, a Legendary Pokémon intended for use as a tool of destruction,” reads the familiar-sounding plot summary forEvolution. “But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge.”

It’s all coming back to me now – especially the Pikachu-on-Pikachu slapfest and the tear-shedding. If I’m being honest, my favorite part of the original was the lead-in short, Pikachu’s Vacation. I haven’t seenPokémon: The First Moviesince the VHS days, but it left quite an impression on me as a kid.
